Get your free estimateRheem Thermostat Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Rheem-compatible thermostats across Atlanta, with most installations running $180 – $420 parts and labor included. If your current thermostat is dead, reading wrong temperatures, or your heat pump short-cycles, we can usually get a new one on the wall the same day we arrive. Most Atlanta homeowners call us after noticing the display flickers or the system runs for 20 minutes and shuts off before the house actually reaches the set temperature – that’s the thermostat lying to the furnace about what’s happening, and it only gets worse in July and January when your system is working hardest.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Rheem puts its name on thermostats paired with their Classic, Prestige, and EcoNet series heat pumps, furnaces, and packaged units. The compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Atlanta DIY attempts: Rheem systems built after roughly 2018 with EcoNet communicating technology will not run correctly on a generic thermostat. The EcoNet protocol carries data, not just a simple on/off signal. If you have an EcoNet control, you need an EcoNet-compatible replacement, and we carry those along with standard 24-volt Rheem thermostats for older single-stage and two-stage systems.
The quick way to identify what you have: pull the thermostat off its base and look for a label that says “EcoNet” or “Communicating.” If you see it, do not buy a $40 thermostat from a big-box store and wire it in. You will lose staging, dehumidification control, and in some cases the system won’t start at all. For standard models, the serial number on the back of the thermostat usually starts with “T” followed by a series code, and we can match that in minutes over the phone. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, but we stock OEM Rheem thermostats and quality aftermarket equivalents that work reliably on their systems.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Display goes blank or flickers intermittently. This often means the thermostat is losing its 24-volt feed from the furnace control board, or the internal solder joints are cracking from years of heat cycling in an Atlanta attic wall. A flickering display is the early warning sign of a full failure.
- System short-cycles – runs 5 to 10 minutes, shuts off, starts again. The temperature sensor inside the thermostat has drifted out of calibration and thinks the room is 2 or 3 degrees warmer than it actually is. We see this constantly in Midtown condos and older Buckhead homes where the thermostat sits in a warm hallway.
- Set temperature and actual room temperature never match. You set 72, the house feels like 78, but the thermostat reads 72. This is a dead giveaway of a failed thermistor, the tiny component that senses room temperature. No amount of battery changing fixes it.
- Heat pump runs in emergency heat mode constantly. On Rheem heat pumps, a failing thermostat can drop the signal that tells the outdoor unit to run, leaving your electric heat strips doing all the work. Your power bill in January will tell the whole story before you even notice the warm-but-expensive air.
- Buttons don’t respond or settings change on their own. The tactile switches on the face of the thermostat wear out, especially on models people touch every day for five or six years. When you have to press hard three times to change the temperature, the end is near.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, expect to pay $180 – $420 installed for a Rheem-compatible thermostat replacement. The low end covers a straightforward single-stage swap where the existing wiring is good and the thermostat base mounts cleanly. The high end covers an EcoNet communicating thermostat replacement, running new wiring from the furnace to the wall, or correcting someone’s previous DIY attempt that left a tangle of crossed conductors.
Every installation comes with a written price before we touch anything, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That means if the new thermostat fails within a year of us installing it, we return and replace it at no charge. No argument, no service fee, no fine print. You know exactly what you’re paying and what happens if something goes wrong. That’s the whole deal.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a few things before calling: check that the thermostat has fresh batteries, verify the breaker for the furnace hasn’t tripped, and press the display to see if it responds at all. Those are safe checks. What you should not do is start pulling wires out of the back of a live thermostat. The 24-volt control wiring is low voltage, so it won’t shock you badly, but crossing the wrong two wires can smoke the control board on your furnace, and that turns a $300 thermostat job into a $700 furnace repair. We have also walked into too many Atlanta homes where someone watched a video, swapped wires, and lost all cooling on an August afternoon. If you’re not fully certain, call us at (762) 465-4570 and we’ll have it diagnosed and fixed the same day.
FAQs
In our experience across Atlanta, most Rheem thermostats last 7 to 10 years before the buttons wear out or the temperature sensor drifts. Atlanta’s heat and humidity mean your HVAC system runs more hours per year than most of the country, and that accelerated runtime shortens thermostat life compared to cooler climates.
Rarely. A loose wire or a burned-out backlight can sometimes be repaired, but a failed temperature sensor or worn button contacts means we replace the thermostat. When the repair cost gets close to half the price of new, replacement makes more sense. We’ll tell you straight which way to go before any work begins. Call (762) 465-4570 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing.
Most standard Rheem thermostat replacements take 30 to 60 minutes from the time we arrive to the time we test the system in both heating and cooling modes. EcoNet communicating thermostat replacements can run 60 to 90 minutes because the thermostat has to sync with the equipment and we verify every stage of operation before we leave.
Yes. Our trucks carry standard 24-volt Rheem-compatible thermostats and EcoNet-compatible replacements, along with thermostats that work on Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems. In most cases, the thermostat we need is in the truck when we arrive, not ordered and scheduled for a second visit.
Know what’s wrong, know what it costs, know it’s covered – that’s the whole deal. If your Rheem thermostat is acting up and you’re in Atlanta, call (762) 465-4570 for a free estimate. We answer the phone live, 24 hours a day. Devin Marlowe has been diagnosing Rheem systems straight the first time for years, and he will tell you exactly what you need before a single tool comes out of the truck.
